4 Easy Ways to Create a Fun & Organized Playroom
Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, aunt, or uncle, having kids in the house adds a sense of fun to any home. Even with Netflix and iPads, kids still love their creative play time.
But when you have little ones in your home, play time can very quickly turn your living room into a cluttered area. Toys are left all over the floor, craft supplies are left out on the tables - or worse, craft time ends up on all over the walls.
That doesn’t mean your living room needs to be off limits! We’ve compiled a list of our favourite playroom ideas that keep your living room or basement kid-friendly and organized while still matching your decor.
1) You can never have enough storage space
Storage solutions are your best friend when it comes to creating a kids playroom. You’re most likely familiar with large Rubbermaid tubs, but these can often get too heavy for kids to carry, not to mention they take up a large amount of space. Instead, try smaller, soft-sided storage bins. These can be stacked in bookcases at a reachable height for kids, or even underneath benches. Many of these storage boxes come with a blank space for labeling as well, making clean up time that much easier.

Another idea we love for storage is over-the-door shoe holders. These can be great for organizing craft supplies or dolls.

For smaller toy pieces like beads or Legos, try using empty kitchen jars.

2) Don’t be afraid of craft time
Some of the best keepsakes you’ll have from your little ones are drawings or paintings that we like to call masterpieces. But most paint and pastels don’t go well with your brand new carpet…
Nonetheless, we encourage play rooms to offer surfaces for your budding artists to work. You’ve probably seen chalkboards used on the wall for creative drawing, but we like to take this idea even further. By using chalkboard paint, you can turn any table top into a drawing surface.
If there’s a drawing your little artist is particularly proud of, why not take a few photos on your phone or camera and have them printed off on high quality paper for display?
Displaying these works of art is another great way to add to the decor of the room. Try hanging photos or papers on the walls with pants hangers or clothing pins.

3) Make use of the space you have
If you don’t have the space to dedicate a full room to a kids play area, there are many ways to create a small nook for reading or other activities. We love the idea of sectioning off a small area of your home dedicated to play time or quiet time.
Window areas often make great spaces to curl up with a book, and they can be transformed so easily. Try using a simple rod and curtain to section off the area, and use floating shelves to hold the books.

Or if you have a corner that you can dedicate to crafts or homework, it’s easy to add a small desk and some hanging organizers.

4) Incorporate Learning with Play
If your little ones are still learning the ABC’s, there are many fun ways to bring this into the play area.
Take the storage solutions from above, for example. Try labeling each storage bin with a letter from A-Z, and keeping toys in their corresponding letter box. Dolls in Box D, Lego pieces in Box L, etc.

Numbered boxes with certain categories also work with storage solutions. For example, you might have 4 boxes. Box 1 is for dolls or action figures, Box 2 is for art supplies, Box 3 is for stuffed animals, etc.
Or if your kids are still learning to tell time, try mounting a decorative wall clock with large numbers.

To add to this, you might have a chart or wall decoration with time telling tips (1 Hour = 60 Minutes), and rules for play time, such as from Monday - Friday (another great lesson chart to have around!), play time is from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m.
Creating a fun, bright environment for kids to play doesn’t need to be stressful or expensive, and in fact, can be quite fun if you get your little ones involved in the process! Consider seeking their expertise for paint jobs like the chalkboard table, or for helping with choosing patterns for curtains and upholstery.
